Mario's Mold Photos: The Secret Life of Abandoned Walls

Mario spent approximately three years shooting fungus. Every day when he returned from his walks, showing me his most recent discoveries, he always asked my opinion on the final cut. After a thousand days of this, I had been overexposed to the images. They’d lost their power over me.

We traveled together to Zagreb to mount his show, called “The Secret Life of Abandoned Walls,” at Croatia’s National Museum of Modern Art. While Mario was in the gallery, I strolled around the city, happy that Covid restrictions had ended and thrilled to be out.

When I returned to the museum and caught sight of the hanging photos, I was awestruck. The images were powerful and mesmerizing, almost kaleidoscopic in that they took your mind to entirely different places, depending on what angle you viewed them from or what mood you were in.

Sitting in a café just outside, I noticed that everyone who passed by was compelled to stop and enter, wanting to know what this exhibition was — were they paintings or what? Nobody could just walk by; the images pulled them inside.

These 27-inch (70 cm) by 27-inch (70 cm) photos, printed on metal, capture the essence of Mario. I’m selling these works to anyone interested in keeping Mario’s genius alive. I don’t want them to be locked away in storage.
